Bio

Josh Mills was named head men’s basketball coach at Dallas College North Lake in June 2022 after spending three seasons as the associate head coach under National Junior College Athletic Association Hall of Fame inductee Tim McGraw from 2018-22.

In two seasons as head coach with the Blazers, Mills has compiled a 54-12 record.

Mills was named the NJCAA Division III Coach of the Year after guiding the Blazers to a national championship in 2023-24. The Blazers beat host Herkimer College, 74-61, to capture the program's fifth NJCAA Division III championship -- the most in junior college men's basketball. North Lake went 29-4 overall, 10-0 in the Dallas Athletic Conference. It was the second straight year North Lake went unbeaten in the league, and also the second straight year the Blazers were 16-0 at home. The Blazers ended the year on a 23-game winning streak. North Lake went 8-4 against NJCAA Division I and II opponents. Mills was named the DAC Coach of the Year for the second straight year. He coached NJCAA Division III Player of the Year Jakob Zenon, a First Team All-American. 

In his first season as head coach in 2022-23, Mills directed the Blazers to a 25-8 overall, 10-0 Dallas Athletic Conference record. North Lake won the league regular season title, along with the NJCAA Division III South Central District championship. The Blazers advanced to the NJCAA Division III national tournament. North Lake won 21 straight games, and were unbeaten at home. The Blazers were ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA Division III poll for most of the season. The Blazers boasted the No. 1 scoring defense in NJCAA Division III. The Blazers allowed the fewest number of rebounds and assists, and had the highest rebound margin in the nation. Mills was named the DAC Coach of the Year. He also was named the HoopDirt.com Juco Coach of the Week on February 14, 2023. The Blazers also earned the NJCAA All-Academic Team honor after posting a 3.24 grade point average. It was the second highest team GPA for men's basketball teams in NJCAA Division III. Mills coached Second Team All-American Darion Jones.

As an assistant coach for the Blazers, Mills coached 2022 NJCAA Division III Player of the Year Greg Crawford and 2006 National Player of the Year Chris Agwumaro.

Mills began his coaching career at North Lake in 2004, and was a part of the 2006 national championship team. After his first stint with the Blazers, Mills had coaching stops at Impact Basketball Academy, Highland Community College, Independence Community College, Texas Tech University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Wake Forest University and Ranger College before returning home to assist with the Blazers once again. He played an integral role in the 2022 NJCAA Division III national championship team, which produced two All-Americans, one of which was the National Player of the Year.

A native of Irving, Texas, Mills graduated from Nimitz High School. He earned Bachelor of Science in kinesiology from the University of North Texas and Master of Science in health, human performance and recreation from Pittsburg State University. He also holds a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

He, his wife, Alexis, and daughters, Olivia and Jordyn, reside in Flower Mound, Texas.
