Bio

Derek Holland was named an assistant baseball coach at Dallas College North Lake in 2024. He works with the pitching staff, serves as a first base coach, holding on-field instruction and player development duties.

Holland assisted with the Blazers' program in 2023 on an occasional basis, working with the pitchers. He also has given motivational talks to area high school teams. 

From 2009-21, Holland had a 13-year Major League Baseball career as a pitcher with the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers. A 25th-round draft pick by the Rangers in 2006, he made his MLB debut in 2009. In 2011, he went 16-5 with a 3.95 earned run average, 162 strikeouts and an American League-leading four complete game shutouts in 198 innings, while starting 32 games as the Rangers advanced to the World Series. In 2013, he went 10-9 with a 3.42 ERA, a career-high 189 strikeouts and two shutouts in 213 innings, starting 33 games. He also pitched in the 2010 World Series with the Rangers, following a season he was 3-4 with a 4.08 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 14 appearances, including 10 starts. Holland went 82-83 with a 4.62 ERA and 1,241 strikeouts in his career. In eight postseason series over four seasons in his career, he was 3-1 with a 5.02 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings, making 14 appearances and five starts.

A native of Newark, Ohio, Holland played at Wallace State Community College in Alabama.

He lives in Irving, Texas.
